Process for identifying Malfunctioning Timers

I have just had all of our broken timers repaired by Competition Electronics. In the future when timers are malfunctioning, PLEASE - wrap the timer in a piece of printer paper with a short description of the malfunction and set it aside. PLEASE do not stick a paster or target tape on the timer with a scribble of the problem. These are difficult to remove and don't provide the repair shop enough information to repair the timer.
